Standard Poodle
General Description:
Carrying himself proudly, very active, intelligent and elegant-appearing dog, squarely built, well proportioned, moving soundly. The Poodle has about him an air of distinction and dignity peculiar to himself. He is a versatile and wonderful companion, a charming animal, pleasing to live with in every way. Gifted with grace and intelligence, all-knowing with great intuitiveness. A playmate for children and a comfort to the elderly. A family member. Whatever the situation calls for he becomes. When engaged, the poodle can be funny and frolicsome, hamming it up in playful situations.
Size:
Females: Preferred height at the withers is over 15 inches, and roughly 45 – 55 pounds. Males: Preferred height at the withers is over 15 inches, and roughly 55 - 70 pounds.
Color:
All pure colors, such as black, gray, cream, blue, apricot, white, red, or brown. Parti or two or more colors would be disqualified. NOTE: These are sometimes sold as “rare”.

Life expectancy:
10 to 15 years.
Children:
A playmate for children and a comfort to the elderly. A family member. Whatever the situation calls for he becomes.
Other animals:
Does well with other animals.
Abilities:
Exceptionally smart, active and excels in obedience training.
Shedding/Grooming:
They should be brushed several times a week and clipped regularly, about every month to 6 weeks. Ears must be cleaned and hair that grows in them plucked to discourage ear infections.
Health:
Poodles can be prone to some eye and skin conditions, ear infections, hip dysplasia, and bloating.
Best with:
Anyone!
Not for:
Someone who does not want to deal with the grooming, ear plucking or is looking for a couch potato.
Pros:
To own a poodle is to be captivated. Poodles are quick-witted with a sense of humor, inventing games especially with each other and children. They are eager to be included in everything their family does whether camping, hiking or offering a knowing look to the disabled with grace and sensitivity. His hypoallergenic coat may reduce allergic reactions.
Cons:
Requires regular grooming, which can be costly, and keeping ears cleaned to avoid infection.
