SPDR’s 2009 Rescue Statistics

During 2009, SPDR was notified about 2,292 purebred dogs needing new homes. This year three major breeds continue to be unrepresented—German Shepherds (usually in the top 3 breeds), Golden Retrievers and Cocker Spaniels (both usually in the top 10). Pit Bulls were #1 on this list again as they have been every year since 2001 (except in 2005 when there was no Breed Rep for them). The Pit Bull Breed Rep handled 859 dogs—37% of all the dogs SPDR handled this year. The rest of the top ten made up 45% of the total. For the complete statistics for all SPDR breeds in 2009 and an explanation of how to read them, go to our website: www.spdrdogs.org.

A very heart-felt thank you goes to the dedicated Breed Reps, Co-Reps, Foster Homes, and the many volunteers who helped SPDR continue to serve its mission. Not only are SPDR’s annual statistics an important educational tool for the public, they are an excellent testimony to the success of our organization as a whole!
